My Remarkable Journey

The past year had been remarkable; a roller coaster of emotion, as five amazing racing greyhounds found their way into my home and my heart. Once I decided to become a foster person for these dogs, I jumped in with wild abandon and a total lack of common sense. I also had two greyhounds of my own, Ava, a sweet, very smart red fawn, and Alex, a big red and white male, also very sweet and also very rambunctious. These two dogs filled my life with joy and wonder, especially after losing my first greyhound, Lola, to cancer. They...

Lola and Her Mini-van

Early on in our venture with greyhounds one thing became clear.  We needed a bigger car.  Since Mike had a big SUV company car (and yes, it is justified because he hauls around mass quantities of camera equipment) that could only be used for work, I had an aging Toyota Corolla.  That was fine with me.  It got me there and back, it had long been paid for and that’s all I cared about. A Day in the Trenches: From Pristine to Triage

Husband Mike and I live in what was a nice, small, open design, contemporary house.  Both the house and the yard were completely remodeled six years ago.  We worked so hard for the better part of a year to transfer this outdated, over-painted rental into our dream home.  The house was redone in very pale to white colors, very light hardwood floors and acid washed, polished concrete floors.  The yard was sculpted with strips of grass, paved areas and different textured rock areas with a water feature, fruit trees, berry bushes, etc.  Truly lovely. Less than a...

Greyhound Zen

Today is Sunday, December 18th.  I walk around the neighborhood with three greyhounds and see decorations everywhere.  In the yards, lights on the houses, Christmas trees in the windows . . . and everyone seems to be in a good space, greeting us as we go by, smiling, asking about the hounds . . . it is truly the holiday season. I come home, unleash the dogs and look around.  Just leashes, dog toys in every room, dog beds in every room, one sneaker and one bedroom shoe (Lucky!!!) on the couch, and a huge Great Dane crate in...

The Legend of Lola

The Legend of Lola

Lola arrived in California with a group of racing greyhounds out of Phoenix, Arizona at 2 ½ years of age.  She was tested as cat safe and adopted by a family.   Legend is that the family started lure coursing her “for fun”.   After about 18 months with this family, prey drive fully awakened by her coursing, she killed the family cat.  The family immediately turned her back in to the greyhound placement agency. She was then taken in, along with another greyhound, by a retired woman in the gold country of California, where she and her companion had free...
