A Day in the Trenches: From Pristine to Triage

Husband Mike and I live in what was a nice, small, open design, contemporary house.  Both the house and the yard were completely remodeled six years ago.  We worked so hard for the better part of a year to transfer this outdated, over-painted rental into our dream home.  The house was redone in very pale to white colors, very light hardwood floors and acid washed, polished concrete floors.  The yard was sculpted with strips of grass, paved areas and different textured rock areas with a water feature, fruit trees, berry bushes, etc.  Truly lovely. Less than a...

The Opposite of Zen, The Crumpled Crew, and Happy Holidays to you!

Christmas day started so well.  Husband Mike was actually home, a situation that almost never happens.  Being a TV news photojournalist, he always works on every holiday.  He warned me before I married him so I don’t complain.  However, this year his regular weekend days off coincided with the Christmas holidays, so we were very excited about being together. Unfortunately, my girls, Lori, who lives in Philadelphia and Jenna, who lives in Napa, could not be here for the day.  So Mike and I decided to make the best of it and have a wonderful day cooking an...

Santa's Dress Rehearsal with Ava, Lucky & Alex

What a wonderful year this has been. It’s been full of walks in the park, a road trip with Alex and Ava, and a total of five foster dogs, all unique and all wonderful in his own way. And yes, they were all males. Some I’ve written about, and some stories are yet to come. Thank you my boys, for allowing me to be a part of your universe.   Newton:  My first love. We struggled and learned together. And it was challenging.  It was so very hard to see you move on.  But what a wonderful life you...

Greyhound Zen

Today is Sunday, December 18th.  I walk around the neighborhood with three greyhounds and see decorations everywhere.  In the yards, lights on the houses, Christmas trees in the windows . . . and everyone seems to be in a good space, greeting us as we go by, smiling, asking about the hounds . . . it is truly the holiday season. I come home, unleash the dogs and look around.  Just leashes, dog toys in every room, dog beds in every room, one sneaker and one bedroom shoe (Lucky!!!) on the couch, and a huge Great Dane crate in...

Learning to Treasure

Today was the Sunday after Thanksgiving. Husband Mike was up, getting ready to take resident greyhounds Ava and Alex on a morning romp with their Sunday morning playgroup.  Lucky, our latest foster, had a sore foot from a misstep yesterday so, knowing we wouldn’t be able to hold him back from running with the hounds and risking further aggravation, I told Mike to go on without us and I would just give Lucky a walk around the neighborhood and work on his leash manners. The neighborhood streets of Sacramento seemed quiet in the damp, grey and foggy morning...

Okay Lucky, You Win!

Okay Lucky, You Win!

I take the responsibility of fostering greyhounds very seriously.  I want them to be the best they can be so that when they find their forever homes there is no chance of them ever having to be uprooted again.  I want them to have good leash manners; I want them to never counter surf; I want no unwarranted barking (squirrel sentinel notwithstanding); I want no ripping the squeaky heart out of toys (dream on); and I want no furniture lounging.  The last rule is just in case their new owners actually don’t allow dogs on the furniture.  Really?  Can...
